Form and Formlessness: A Poem in 150 Parts

This is for David Handwerker, my T'ai Chi teacher, completed January, 2002, by Annie Seikonia

1. In the pre-dawn murk. . .
Choosing what is necessary
For the journey. . .

2. Each step forward is
A new beginning, a new
Lifes first unfolding.

3. To the left unknown
Spirits dwell, fresh ghostly unseen
Adversaries.

4. To the right known
Spirits dwell, ancient ghostly unseen
Adversaries.

5. Wind the inner clock.
The spring slowly uncoils
Back into the ocean.

6. Friends stroll together
Until the road forks,
Dissolving into thick mist.

7. Push yourself over
The cliff of hesitation:
You'll find you can fly.

8. The tail of frozen
Lightning flicks, ready to connect
Heaven and earth.

9. The sun that carries
Shadows over the mountains,
Folds them into night.

10. The immense mountains
Press you deeper into earth,
The higher you climb.

11. The white crane measures
The sun, rooted firmly in
The turbulent sea.

12. Round the corner slowly:
Surprise lurks within
The moments vast mirror.

13. Hear, sing, play your
Instruments perfect chord.
Even the stars will vibrate.

14. Round the corner slowly:
Surprise lurks within
The moments vast mirror.

15. Grasp today gently.
It is the mother
Of all future tomorrows.

16. Round the corner slowly:
Surprise lurks within
The moments vast mirror.

17. Hear, sing, play your
Instruments perfect chord.
Even the sky will vibrate.

18. Round the corner slowly.
Surprises lurk within
The moments vast mirror.

19. On the hilltop, draw the sword,
Blinding the blue sky
With your own young sun.

20. As you travel,
Deflect all harm, rising
And sinking to ride the day.

21. Consider the blue force
That pushes the moon
Slowly into the hills.

22. The noon sun is hot.
Embrace the dying moment
Pulsing in your wrists.

23. How many lifetimes
Have you spent carrying
The morning to the cool mountains?

24. Wind the inner clock.
The spring slowly uncoils
Back into the ocean.

25. Friends stroll together
Until the road forks,
And you dissolve into mist.

26. Push yourself over
The cliff of hesitation.
You'll find you can fly.

27. Whips of frozen rain descend,
Shattering the earth
With the pelt of sky.

28. Only the court jester
Is allowed to mimic
The kings long decline.

29. The monkey chatters
To distract you from the path
Of true intention.

30. The monkey babbles
To unnerve you with his foolish,
Sly flirtations.

31. The monkey mimes
To deter you from
Your pure path of sacred vision.

32. The monkey cackles
To cast doubt upon
Your true and trusted mission.

33. The monkey screams
To deafen silence with
The anger of corruption.

34. Free yourself from opposition:
Monkeys fly in
All directions.

35. The sun that carries
Shadows over the mountains
Folds them into sky.
36. The immense mountains
Press you deeper into earth,
The higher you climb.

37. The white crane measures
The sun, rooted firmly in
The turbulent sea.

38. Round the corner slowly.
Surprise lurks within
The moments vast mirror.

39. The precious needle
Glimmers like a diamond
Under the warm blue sea.

40. You cut through the water
Like a knife, pouring diamonds
Into the sand.

41. The circle turns
And returns while you dance on
The hilltop of desire.

42. As you travel,
Deflect all harm, rising
And sinking to ride the day.

43. Step to meet the known
Spirits, old unseen
Adversaries of the heart.

44. Wind the inner clock.
The spring slowly uncoils
Back into the ocean.

45. Friends stroll together
Until the road forks,
Dissolving into thick mist.

46. Push yourself over
The cliff of hesitation:
Youll find you can float.

47. The whip of frozen
Lightning stands, ready to connect
Heaven and earth.

48. Kaleidoscopic days
Of brick, sky, morphing clouds,
Last without lasting.

49. New trees for new birds,
Sturdy green lace frames
Skimming ships and roiling sails.

50. Pursue time over
Green fields. It pulses through you,
Undeterred by haste.

51. Time is both friend and
Enemy. Together
You fly across all skies.

52. The only way to
Halt the river of time
Is by letting it go.

53. The trail of frozen
Lightning flicks, ready to connect
Heaven and earth.

54. This strong, excellent horse and I
Tell each other our truths
Without a word.

55. Crossing the bridge,
From west to east,
Birds fly from our feet into the light.

56. Crossing the fjord
From east to west,
Fish dart from our hooves, into the murk.

57. We spin, kick,
Fly into the sheer suns glare
Without leaving the ground.

58. Round the corner slowly:
Surprises lurk within
The moments vast mirror.

59. Grasp today gently.
It is the shining mother
Of all tomorrows.

60. Step down, look long
Into the fearful abyss
To claim your victory.

61. The circle turns,
Healing all wounds. Nonetheless,
Use your sword carefully.

62. As you travel,
Deflect all harm, rising
And sinking to ride the day.

63. Aim for the sun,
Follow the moon
Reflected in the mirror-water.

64. Strike the stunning
Tiger to defend the open
Kingdom of your mind.

65. Strike the sacred
Tiger to expel his last breath
From your vast stronghold.

66. Kick the sky to shake
Loose the first stars
Glimmering in the quiet mind.

67. Hold the dying sun
Between fists. Hear it sing
Through burning empty wrists.

68. Kick the moon to shake
Loose the first drops of rain
Sparkling in nights deep eyes.

69. Dance with gravity,
Reel the rope in,
To cast out the days senseless harm.

70. On the hilltop, draw the sword,
Blinding the self
With the suns final rays.

71. As you travel,
Deflect all harm, rising
And sinking, toward new dark.

72. Consider the natal force
That pushes the moon
Up over the hills.

73. The evening is cool.
Embrace the precious moment
Pulsing in your wrists.

74. How many lifetimes
Have you spent carrying
The evening towards the next suns warmth?

75. Wind the inner clock,
The spring slowly uncoils
Back into the ocean.

76. Friends stroll together
Until the road forks,
Dissolving into thick mist.

77. Push yourself over
The cliffs of hesitation:
Become the blind song.

78. The torch flicks away
Darkness, lighting the way to
The circle of sleep.

79. Part heaven and earth
To calm the still-wild animal
Under your hand.

80. Part heaven and earth
To calm the pit of turmoil
Within your wild heart.

81. Part heaven and earth.
They will merge again
In the wild, sweet meadowland.

82. To the left new
Spirits rise, from the unseen
Rivers within the pines.

83. To the right old
Spirits rise, from the unseen
Rivers within our lies.

84. Wind the inner clock,
The spring uncoils slowly,
Feeding the galaxies.

85. Lovers stroll together
Until one drifts behind,
Dissolving into mist.

86. Push yourself over
The cliff of self-doubt: land
Upright on a new cliff.

87. The tail of frozen
Lightning flickers, connecting
Brilliance and darkness.

88. Weaving stories into
Stars, the weaver reveals
The colorful truth.

89. Weaving music into
Silence, the weaver reveals
Rhythms of dust.

90. Weaving emotion into
Tapestries, the
Weaver finds balance.

91. Weaving darkness
Into light, the weaver
Travels the bright universe.

92. To the left new specters
Wander, unable to
Enter the locked gate.

93. To the right, old specters
Fade, crumbling into dust
Before the locked gate.

94. Wind the inner clock:
The flood slowly trickles
Back into the ocean.

95. Enemies forced to
Walk the same road become friends
During the journey.

96. Push yourself over
These cliffs of terror: the nightmare
Is never real.

97. The tail of lightning
Flicks, ready to torrefy
Nighttime delusions.

98. Fantastic dreams
Of colorful cities
Sweep through the minds open eye.

99. Clouds conceal bright stars.
The scent of moonlight sweeps over
Mountains deep sleep.

100. Chasing stars across
Worlds, miles and minds, try
Following their ceaseless change.

101. Time does not exist.
Only the white clouds
Breath frosts the blazing star fields.

102. The only sure way to
Halt the river of time
Is by plunging in.

103. The tail of frozen
Light marks the sky
With incandescent energy.

104. The snake slides
Silently over rocks,
Flicking his long, listening tongue.

105. The rooster rises to full height,
Announcing his
Golden mastery.

106. The rooster rises to full height,
Commanding the light
To come forth, come.

107. The monkey pretends
To be your friend to win over
Your sacred mind.

108. The monkey dances
To trap you in the corner
With his bold prowess.

109. The monkey dreams
Of lush, ruthless jungles --
One eye open at all times.

110. The monkey schemes,
A small furry acrobat
With a killer instinct.

111. The monkey rages,
Unable to wrest control
Of the human brain.

112. Free yourself from indecision:
Monkeys fly in
All directions.

113. The sun that carries
Night over the mountains
Gives birth to the first light.

114. The mountains lift you
Beyond their own might,
The higher you dare to climb.

115. The white crane measures
The dawn, rooted firmly in
The golden-white sea.

116. Round the corner softly.
The moments vast
Mirror is always invisible.

117. The precious diamond
Pierces like a needle,
Aloft in sparkling waves.

118. The arc of night
Unfolds slowly, pouring
Sand into the cobalt glass.

119. The snake hisses
And coils, flicking its tongue
To hear the bright firelight.

120. As you advance,
Deflect all arrogance
For the sake of your journey.

121. Step forward to feed
The hungry spirits, while
Guarding them from your heart.

122. Wind the inner clock
Too tight and it will burst
Into a hurricane.

123. No matter who strolls with
You, eventually
All our roads dissolve.

124. Push the stillness forward
Into the motionless
Flight of darkness s end.

125. Inhale the night.
A thousand springs are unleashed
By the rotating earth.

126. Dreams pass like clouds
Over the horizon.
Only phantom clouds remain.

127. Clouds furl under fingers.
A night wind kisses
The sparkling morning dew.

128. The stars are beginning
To fade into the vast lake of
Morning pearl.

129. Time was invented by humans
To measure clouds
That cant be measured.

130. The bright green fly does
Not know it will only live
For one endless day.

131. The rivers tail
Becomes the skys tale, told by the
Stone that once was star.

132. I have ridden this horse
Until our bodies, minds
And hearts are one field.

133. My hand thrusts through
The light, cutting into
The essence of desire.

134. The first birds shimmer
And glide, as if just released
From a joyous feast.

135. The dawn climbs and turns,
Punishing the dark
With its brilliant golden fist.

136. Step forward to greet
The day that may separate
You from your true self.

137. Wind the inner clock
That beats its rhythm to the whole
Earths perfect drum.

138. Pressing forward from deep
Stillness: all roads dissolve
Into the center.

139. The moon pushes daylight
Over the rim of the
Blue planets dim edge.

140. Bird wings unfurl,
New eyes open onto
A full, unraveling world.

141. The snake of night
Slithers over the hill, vanishing
In the dark cave.

142. Ancient stars bloom in
Our bodies, fire burning
Through our radiant eyes.

143. Reconsider what
The dawn may bring us before
Leaping into action.

144. Clear all obstacles
Keeping the mind from its
Perfect inner journey.

145. Bend the bow, release
The arrows target: mind flows
Into mind, piercing mind.

146. The circle opens
And closes, like the dancing
Fist of the tall sun.

147. As you advance,
Destroy preconceptions
For the sake of your journey.

148. Consider the sun
Rising in your body,
Creating day from night.

149. The dawn is brilliant.
Release the diamond
Shining from within your heart.

150. The long journey ends
Only to begin over
With a wiser soul.

Each poem is meant to refer to one of the 150 postures in the Yang-Style-Long-Form of T'ai Chi.
